KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Christina Higgins (Professor, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa)
BIO
Dr. Christina Higgins is a Professor in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She strives to be a sociolinguist for the "real world" and to engage in scholarship that will result in positive change in society. Her research examines multilingual practices and identities among people who navigate local-global affiliations and tensions, with particular attention to marginalized populations. In her role as director of the Charlene Junko Sato Center for Pidgin, Creole, and Dialect Studies, she has organized public-facing events that invite people to learn more about Pidgin, the creole language of Hawaiʻi. This work includes documentary films, a museum exhibit, an app for crowd-sourcing linguistic landscape data, and citizen science projects. She has also researched sociopolitical aspects of learning and using ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiian language, including family language policy and challenges faced by new speakers. She teaches courses in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, narrative analysis, intercultural communication, linguistic landscapes, and qualitative research methods.
TITLE
Centering identity in language learning and teaching contexts in the new millennium
ABSTRACT
In this talk, I discuss the central role of identity in language learning, and I explore implications for language teachers, drawing on a range of target language contexts. I begin by outlining hallmarks of identity in the new millennium, a term that summarizes how people’s sense of self has transformed in the context of the early 21st century, particularly in relation to globalization, technology, and media (Higgins, 2011). Next, I consider how new millennial contexts are influencing language learning in terms of identity. First, I highlight research that has explored Korean language learners’ experiences, with a focus on heritage and diasporic learners. I survey research findings which reveal learners’ struggles to position themselves as legitimate speakers of Korean due to specific ideologies of Koreanness that can serve as obstacles to their sense of belonging. I turn to recent research that has shown how these ideologies can be challenged through learners’ resilience, and how a range of linguistic practices and communities of practice have emerged among such learners. I then compare the experiences of Korean language learners with heritage learners of Hawaiian, or ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, to illustrate the high degree of similarity that these learners face. Like many Korean learners, Hawaiian learners can struggle to develop a sense of belonging in Hawaiian speaking communities because of ideologies about linguistic and cultural legitimacy and authenticity. Drawing on interviews and social media data from an ongoing study (Solomon & Higgins), I illustrate these experiences and draw links to Korean language learning contexts. I end the talk with implications for language researchers and language teachers that engage with these tensions and which invite learners to center their own identities in the classroom and beyond.

IAKLE SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Dr. Sun Hee Park (이화여자대학교)
Vice President of the International Association of Korean Language Education (IAKLE)
BIO
Sun Hee Park is a professor in the Department of Korean Studies at Ewha Womans University, where she also serves as Dean of the Graduate School of Teaching Foreign Languages and Director of the Ewha Language Center. She is currently Vice President of the International Association of Korean Language Education (IAKLE).
Her research focuses on the acquisition of Korean morphosyntax by second language learners and the interface between syntactic, semantic, and discourse-pragmatic domains. She is particularly interested in how L2 learners acquire and process case markers, argument structure, dative constructions, causatives, and information structure, especially in relation to cross-linguistic influence and typological factors.
Her recent publications examine cross-linguistic influence and the syntactic-discourse interface in Korean L2 processing, including a study on the interaction between syntax and information structure in dative sentence processing (Second Language Research, 2024), bilingual use of L2-unique cues in case-marking and locative verb processing (International Journal of Bilingualism, 2022, 2023), and the cross-linguistic effects in processing Korean morphological and syntactic causatives (Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism, 2022). She has also led a large-scale curriculum development project, producing over 40 Korean language textbooks and teacher’s guides for Thai secondary school learners.

TITLE
한국어 문법 교육 연구의 변천과 현황
