AATK 2023 Conference Theme:

TRANSFORMATIVE LANGUAGE LEARNING THROUGH REAL WORLD ENGAGEMENT

In the past two decades, Korean language education and research has explored such issues as language pedagogy, instructional second language acquisition, curriculum development, and program building. Yet as Korean educators and programs continue to facilitate learners’ development of linguistic and cultural competencies, more significant questions emerge: what are we preparing students for and what is the ultimate goal for learning Korean in the 21st century? To begin answering these questions, Korean language educators must innovate and enhance our current teaching methods and curricular goals to go beyond the mere acquisition of language skills and cultural competency. The ultimate curricular goal should be to promote transformation and personal growth in learners so as to empower them to see the world differently and engage it for social impact and change. The 2016 Modern Language Association report indicated that, although there has been an overall decline of foreign language class enrollments since 2013, Korean is not only one of just two languages that had an increase of enrolled students, but also had the highest percentage increase across all levels. With such robust growth and momentum in the field of Korean language education and research, it is time to promote sustainability and further growth by identifying new visions and exploring innovative ways to transcend the limitations of current Korean language classroom practices, textbooks, and curricula.

The aim of the AATK 28th Annual Conference and Professional Development Workshop is to provide a forum for constructive discussions about transformative learning for Korean language students and how it can extend to the real world around them. How can transformative language learning and teaching be operationalized in the Korean language classroom and curriculum? What opportunities and experiential language learning can be implemented to promote a sense of responsible agency in society? What Korean language contents and materials can be used to challenge views and encourage critical thinking for social justice? Furthermore, how can we bring real world engagement to language learners through classroom practices? How might transformative language teaching and learning help students better develop competencies for career readiness in Korean communities? How do we maximize career readiness in our students for the professional world? We encourage submission of proposals and abstracts that investigate and address topics related to transformative teaching and learning in Korean language education.

We invite the submission of proposals and abstracts that discuss various aspects of research and professional development in the field of Korean language education — including those that discuss other aspects of Korean language learning and teaching outside of this year’s theme. In particular, we welcome abstracts from K-12 educators as we plan to reserve at least one workshop session for K-12 participants. There will also be special awards for graduate students who present excellent conference papers. (Note: It will not be applied to a paper co-presented by a faculty member.)

 

북미한국어교육학회 2023 학술대회 주제:

현실 참여를 통한 변혁적 언어 학습

 

지난 수십년 동안 한국어 교육과 연구는 언어 교수법, 교육목적의 제 2 언어 습득, 교과 과정 개발, 프로그램 구축과 같은 문제들을 탐구해 왔습니다. 한국어 프로그램과 교육자가 학습자의 언어와 문화적 능숙도 향상을 도모하면서 봉착하게 되는 보다 더 중요한 질문들은 21세기에 학생들은 무엇을 준비해야 하고 한국어 학습의 최종 목적은 무엇인가입니다. 이러한 질문들에 답하기 위해서 한국어 교육자가 세워야 할 목표는 단순히 언어 능력과 문화적 능숙도의 습득을 넘어 현재의 교수법과 교과 과정 목표를 혁신하고 향상시켜야 한다는 것이겠습니다. 궁극적인 교과 과정의 목표는 학습자의 변혁과 개인적 성장을 촉진하여 그들이 세상을 다르게 보고 사회적 변화와 변동에 관여하고 동참할 수 있도록 해야 합니다. 2016 년 현대어학회(MLA) 보고서에 따르면 2013년 이후 외국어 수업 등록자 수가 전반적으로 감소했지만 한국어는 등록 학생이 증가한 두 개 언어들 중 하나일 뿐만 아니라 모든 레벨에서 가장 높은 증가율을 보였습니다. 한국어 교육 및 연구 분야의 이러한 괄목할 성장과 탄력으로 지금의 한국어 수업 방식, 교과서 및 교과 과정의 한계를 초월하는 새로운 비전과 혁신적인 방법을 모색함으로써 지속 가능성과 추가 성장을 도모해야 할 때입니다.

제 28차 AATK 연례학술대회 및 전문성 개발 워크숍의 목적은 한국어 학생들을 위한 변혁적 학습과 이를 주변 현실 세계로 확장시킬 수 있는 방법에 대한 건설적인 토론의 장을 제공하는 것입니다. 어떻게 하면 변혁적 언어 학습 및 교수법이 한국어 교실과 교과 과정에서 잘 운영될 수 있을까? 사회적 책임감을 고취하기 위해서는 어떤 기회나 경험을 통한 언어 학습이 도입될 수 있을까? 사회 정의를 위한 반론 제기와 비판적 사고를 장려하기 위해 어떤 한국어 콘텐츠와 자료를 사용할 수 있을까? 더 나아가 어떻게 하면 교실 수업 방식을 통해 언어 학습자가 현실 세계에 참여하도록 할 수 있을까? 변혁적인 언어 교수 및 학습은 학생들의 한국 사회 내 직업 준비 역량을 개발하는 데 어떻게 도움이 될 수 있을까? 전문 분야에 대한 학생들의 취업 준비를 어떻게 극대화할 수 있을까? 한국어 교육에서 변혁적 교수법 및 학습과 관련된 주제의 연구 제안을 권장합니다.

올해 선정된 학회 주제뿐만 아니라 한국어 교육과 학습 전반에 걸친 다른 주제들과 관련된 발표 신청을 통해 적극적으로 학회에 참여해 주십시오. 특히 초중고교 선생님들의 적극적인 참여를 위해 최소한 1 개의 워크숍 발표 일정을 따로 준비해 놓겠습니다. 또한 우수 발표 대학원생들을 위한 특별상도 따로 마련되어 있습니다. (Note: 교수와의 공동 발표는 제외)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

1. Presentation Categories

(1) Workshop panel (90 minutes):

Workshop panels address practical concerns and share immediately applicable suggestions on issues ranging from development of programs, materials, and resources to instructional activities and techniques to methods of assessment.

(2) Teaching methods and materials (20-minute presentation followed by Q & A):

This category has been designed for sharing novel and effective practices in teaching Korean. One session has a series of three or four 20-minute presentations and then a 15-minute Q & A session in which all the presenters take questions from the audience together instead of having a brief Q & A after each presentation.

(3) Conference paper (20-minute presentation followed by Q & A):

This section of the meeting entails the presentation of research on topics pertaining to teaching and learning of Korean. Also, we expect explicit statements of the relevance of the presented research to Korean program development and pedagogic practices. A mere description of instructional materials or practices without analysis of data, which would better fit the above category of teaching materials exchange, will not be considered for this category.

• Workshop Abstracts
  • The topic should address current and continuing concerns of the Korean teaching field.
  • The purpose and objective of the workshop should be clear, motivated, and plausible.
  • The contents should be relevant, substantive, and engaging.
  • There should be a viable procedure for audience involvement.
• Teaching Methods and Materials Abstracts
  • The topic should address current and continuing concerns of the Korean teaching field.
  • The purpose and objective of the presentation should be clear, motivated, and plausible.
  • The material should be original and stimulating.
  • The effectiveness of the material should be well demonstrated.
• Conference Papers Abstracts
  • The research goals should be clearly stated and related to existing studies.
  • The research should be based on robust data.
  • The methods should be well-defined and the analysis should be solid.
  • The results and discussion should be substantive and informative.
  • The research should be relevant to Korean teaching.

2. Requirements for Proposal or Abstract Submission

● The presenter or ALL co-presenters listed must be an AATK member at the time of submitting a proposal or abstract.

● Adding presenters will NOT be allowed after submission of a proposal or abstract.

● All accepted presenters must pre-register by April 15th, 2023. Please check that the membership of AATK of the presenter(s) is valid or renewed before the conference. Otherwise, presenter names will NOT appear in the program.

● All session chairs must register for the workshop and conference and be a member of the AATK.

● All presentations must involve original materials, which have never been presented or published elsewhere.

3. Length: Maximum 500 words (English or Korean) + References or data limited to 250 words if applicable.

4. Limit of Submission: No more than 1 individual and 1 joint proposal/abstract, or 2 joint abstracts/proposals per person.

5. Limit of co-presenters: No more than 5 individuals can be listed as co-presenters on a proposal/abstract.

1. 학회 발표 유형

(1) 워크샵 (90 분): 프로그램, 수업 자료, 학습 활동, 평가 방법 개발 등과 관련된 보다 실질적인 내용을 중심으로 하는 워크샵. 적극적인 청중의 참여 유도 필수.

(2) 교수 방법 및 자료 (20 분): 새롭고 효과적인 교수 방법 및 자료를 공유하는 발표. 20 분 발표에 이어 15 분 동안 모든 발표자들이 질문을 함께 받는 시간으로 구성.

(3) 연구 논문 (30 분): 한국어 학습과 교육 관련 학술적 연구 발표. 연구 동기, 데이터 수집, 연구 분석 및 결과에 대한 토론 포함 필수.

2. 초록 제출 시 유의 사항

• 초록 제출은 북미한국어교육학회 회원이어야만 가능함. 즉 모든 발표자/저자들이 초록 제출 시 회원이어야 함.

• 초록 제출 이후 발표자/저자 추가 불가함.

• 초록 심사 결과 발표 이후 모든 발표자/저자는 2023 년 4 월 15 일까지 연례 학회 선등록

필수. 학회 등록 시 그리고 발표 시 AATK 회원 상태 계속 유지 되어야 함.

• 회원가입과 선등록이 마감 날짜까지 이루어지지 않을 경우 학회 프로그램에서 발표자/저자 이름 제외. 세션 담당자들도 북미한국어교육학회 회원이어야 하며 연례 학회 등록 필수.

• 모든 발표는 독창적인 연구여야 하며 타 학회에서 발표했거나 학술지 등에 이미 게재된 논문은 제외.

3. 길이: 영어 또는 한국어로 최대 500 어절 + 참고문헌 250 어절

4. 초록 제출 개수 제한: 한 사람 당 2 개까지만 제출 가능. 단독 발표 1 개와 공동 발표 1 개 또는 2 개의 공동 발표 가능.

5. 공동 발표자/저자 수 제한: 한 초록 당 5 명까지 가능.
