VIRTUAL POSSIBILITIES: INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY IN LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING

With the rapid development of technology and ubiquitous online resources readily available, it is now almost impossible to find a language class that does not incorporate some type of technology. Technology is employed to support effective and efficient language instruction, to engage students of different interests in the language learning process and enhance their learning experiences, and to connect language classrooms to their target-language cultures through various authentic materials. Furthermore, higher education in the 21st century has become increasingly interested in developing and expanding distance-learning programs by employing constantly-updated and newly-developed teaching and learning platforms. By doing so, learning opportunities are extended to students of diverse backgrounds, who otherwise do not have the means to learn a foreign language of their interest. Technology, both in the sense of everyday use and educational application, continues to provide valuable tools for assisting and facilitating more accessible teaching and effective learning.

More than 10 years have passed since the last time the use of technology in foreign language teaching was closely reviewed and discussed at the 2003 AATK Annual Meeting. The theme of the 21st Annual Meeting of the American Association of Teachers of Korean aims to promote discussions about evaluating the resources and knowledge in instructional technology accumulated over the last decade and critically assessing our use of technology in language instruction in order to explore possibilities of incorporating continuously developing online resources and applications in accommodating learners’ diverse needs and goals. We encourage submission of workshop proposals and conference abstracts that address the instructional, pedagogical and educational use of technology. The theme covers all aspects of computer-assisted and technology-enhanced language teaching and learning including, but not limited to, mobile-assisted language teaching and learning, computer-based assessment, instructional application of online resources and social network systems, flipped language classrooms, hybrid language curriculum, e-learning, distance learning and computer-mediated communication.

We also welcome the proposals and abstracts that discuss other aspects of the learning and teaching of the Korean language beyond this year’s theme. We particularly would like to see more K-12 educators submit their abstracts individually or jointly with other college faculty, and plan to reserve at least one workshop session for K-12 participants. There will also be special awards for graduate students who present excellent papers.

 

급속한 과학 기술의 발전과 어디서나 쉽게 접할 수 있는 온라인 자료들의 덕택으로 이제는 어떤 형태이든 테크놀로지를 사용하지 않는 언어 수업을 찾는다는 것은 거의 불가능하다고 할 수 있습니다테크놀로지의 수용과 활용은 보다 효과적이고 효율적인 언어 교수법의 개발다양한 관심사를 가지고 있는 학생들을 언어 습득 과정에 적극적으로 참여시킴으로써 언어 학습 경험을 극대화시키고 더 나아가서는 여러 종류의 생자료 사용을 통해 언어 수업이 이루어지고 있는 교실을 학습 언어의 문화와 연결시키는 역할까지 하고 있습니다또한, 21세기의 대학 교육 기관들은 기존의 원격 교수법과 수업을 확대 발전시키는 데 더욱더 많은 관심과 주의를 기울이고 있는 추세이기도 합니다이러한 원격 수업 방안과 교수법의 개발이 언어 학습의 기회를 보다 확장확대 보급하는 데 중대한 기여를 할 수 있다고 믿기 때문입니다일상에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 테크놀로지는 물론교육적 목적의 테크놀로지까지 포함하여 모든 형태의 과학 기술은 이제 언어 교육과 학습에 필수불가결한 도구가 되었다고 할 수 있는 것입니다

2003 AATK 연례학회에서 외국어 교육에서의 테크놀로지 사용의 중요성을 같이 살펴보고 토론한 지 어느덧 10년이 넘는 시간이 지났습니다이번 2016 21회 연례학회의 주제는 지난 10여년 동안 축적해 온 교육 및 교수법 관련 테크놀로지 자료들과 지식을 검토하고 분석하며 토론을 권장하는 데 그 목표를 두고 있습니다끊임없이 새로이 개발되고 있는 온라인 자료들과 애플리케이션의 적극적인 활용 방안을 모색하는 것이야 말로 한국어 학습자들의 다양한 요구와 목표를 수용하는 데 있어 필수적이기 때문입니다이번 학회에서는 컴퓨터와 테크놀로지를 활용한 언어 교수법과 학습 및 전반적인 교수법과 교육의 모든 측면을 다루려고 합니다보다 구체적으로 같이 토론해 보고 검토해 볼 수 있는 측면들을 몇 가지만 예로 들면 다음과 같습니다컴퓨터 또는 모바일 기능을 활용한 교수법 및 학습법컴퓨터를 활용한 평가 방안온라인 자료들이나 SNS 활용한 교수법 및 교안 작성플립드 (flipped) 언어 수업혼합적 (hybrid) 언어 교육과정,온라인 또는 원거리 학습그리고 컴퓨터를 통한 커뮤니케이션.

선정된 학회 주제뿐만 아니라 한국어 교육과 학습 전반에 걸친 다른 주제들과 관련된 발표 신청을 통해 적극적으로 학회에 참여해 주십시오특히 초중고교 선생님들의 적극적인 참여를 위해 최소한 1개의 워크샵 발표 일정을 준비해 놓았습니다또한 탁월한 발표를 한 대학원생들을 위한 특별상도 따로 마련되어 있기도 합니다회원 여러분의 적극적인 참여를 기대하고 있겠습니다.
