One of the foremost questions all language instructors have is how to teach grammar. The role and method of grammar instruction in foreign language classrooms have been addressed by numerous linguistic theories for last fifty years. Since the emergence of communicative language teaching in the 1970s, both teachers and researchers have come to an agreement that traditional rote learning and grammar-focused instruction do not lead to the actual use and acquisition of a target language. In foreign language classrooms today, the instruction is focused on developing learners' communicative competence and many instructors have their students work on meaningful tasks using the target language designed after task-based language teaching (TBLT) or project-based learning (PBL). Such paradigm shift in language classrooms have brought about some critical issues in language teaching surrounding grammar instruction. It has become more challenging for instructors to design their teaching in a way that learners' use of the target form leads to acquisition in the absence of explicit grammar instruction. Therefore, many learners and instructors alike raise concerns about drawbacks to and difficulties in learning and teaching grammar in today's learner-centered or even flipped language classrooms. To this end, the current webinar aims to address the issue of whether and how grammar should be taught in language classrooms and to propose an instructional model that incorporates the three modes of communication, that is, interpretive mode, interpersonal mode, and presentational mode, into grammar instruction. In this webinar, specific methods and examples to teach grammar in Korean will be introduced. The webinar will also discuss how instructors can design their lessons that go in hand in hand with their textbooks and grammar syllabus used for their courses. After taking the webinar, instructors will have concrete ideas on how to design a lesson to teach grammar in context following the suggested model.
