Empowering Korean Heritage Language Learners: New Challenges in HL Pedagogy and Research
Korean language education in the United States encompasses teaching Korean as a FL and as a HL, but Korean HL education has tended to be overlooked in the larger scope of foreign and second language education. In formal educational settings from K-12 to college as well as community schools, Korean heritage learners are highly visible groups and possess great potential to achieve high-level linguistic competence. As such, these students may serve as assets to the Korean teaching community and contribute more broadly on the national and international stages. At the same time, Korean heritage learners have been exhibiting ever-increasing diversity not only in terms of proficiency levels, learning goals and motivations, but with regard to linguistic profiles and language identities. Korean language educators are thus faced with greater challenges in developing curricula and pedagogy for this varied set of learners.
By focusing on heritage language learners as the theme of the 18th AATK annual meeting, we would like to increase the drive for optimal development and maintenance of heritage language for our students. We need to learn and develop tools to understand their strengths, weaknesses and areas of challenges, and to construct curricula and identify instructional strategies to respond to their expectations, needs and aspirations. Needless to say, separating HL and FL tracks is not always a practical option, nor is it necessarily the most desirable one. The 18th AATK meeting invites proposals and abstracts that can promote productive and enlightened discussion on those crucial challenges in Korean HL education (e.g. better understanding of heritage learners, identifying needs, pedagogy and research, curricula design, assessment, and materials development). We also welcome graduate students, researchers, and teachers to present papers or teaching materials that are relevant to Korean teaching and learning in practice.
1. Presentation Categories
(1) Workshop panel (90 min. June 27-28): Workshop panels address practical concerns and share immediately applicable suggestions on issues ranging from development of program, materials and resources to instructional activities and techniques to methods of assessment.
(2) Materials exchange session (15 minutes presentation in a block of four, followed by individual Q&A and discussion. June 27-28): This category has been designed for audience choice and involvement. After a series of four short presentations, instead of having brief Q&A after each presentation, 30 to 40 minutes is set aside to allow for audience members to have sufficient time to learn more about presentations of their choice. The presenters address the entire audience for 15 minutes each, and then move to designated areas to interact with interested subgroups. Each presenter is advised to bring his or her own laptop and other necessary materials for individual interaction with audience.
(3) Conference paper (20 min + 10 min Q & A. June 28-29): Presentation of research on topics pertaining to teaching and learning of Korean. Mere description of instructional materials or practices without analysis of data will NOT be considered in this category. This would better fit the above category of materials exchange. On the other hand, we expect explicit statement of the relevance of presented research to Korean program development and pedagogic practices.
2. Requirements for proposal or abstract submission
(1) Workshop Panel (90 minutes):
The proposal should include a description of the topic and materials, objectives, and step-by-step plan for INTERACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF PARTICIPANTS.
(2) Teaching materials exchange (15 minutes):
Original and well-tested teaching materials or activities will be selected. The proposal should include a succinct description of the target learners, objectives of instruction, the material or procedure, and its effects.
(3) Conference Paper (20 minutes):
The abstract should include clearly-stated research motives and objectives in the context of existing research, description of data and analysis, and discussion of implications for teaching and future research.
3. Length: Maximum 500 words (English or Korean) + References or data limited to 250 words if applicable
4. Limit of submission: No more than 1 individual and 1 joint proposal/abstract, or 2 joint abstracts/proposals per person.
