[Michigan State University] Assistant Professor (Fixed Term) of Korean
The Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian, and African Languages at Michigan State University is seeking a non-tenure system assistant professor of Korean. This is a full-time, nine-month, academic year position beginning August 16, 2020, and is renewable contingent upon performance.
Responsibilities for this position include:
- teaching introductory to advanced Korean language courses (three courses per semester);
- participating in curriculum, program development, and experiential and innovative teaching and learning activities;
- sharing responsibilities of outreach and co-curricular activities with other Korean faculty;
- contributing to the growth of the Korean Program and the partnership with the Asian Studies Center and/or to the College of Arts & Letters as well as the university itself.
- Ph.D. degree
- Three to four years of experience teaching college students including heritage learners in a classroom setting, preferably in North America.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness (samples of quantitative and qualitative data from teaching evaluations).
- Near-native ability in both Korean and English.
- Ph.D. degree in the fields of Korean language/linguistics, applied linguistics, foreign language teaching and learning, second language acquisition or a related field Ph.D. in hand by date of appointment).
- Be able to offer one course in his/her own expertise based on program needs.
- Training in proficiency-based language instruction.
- Familiarity with language assessment including the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), and the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) assessments.
- Demonstrate proficiency in using technology for language teaching and learning including online teaching.
