CIA Language Instructors deliver programs that provide students with the foreign language communications skills and cross-cultural awareness they need to live and work abroad effectively, or to perform other language-related duties. Foreign Language Instructors apply the latest instructional methodologies to meet highly customized student needs and conduct language proficiency testing in reading, speaking and understanding for skills evaluation. In addition, they may be asked to provide a variety of language support services worldwide.

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's in foreign language, linguistics or a related field; native fluency in the language; 2-5 years of teaching experience; demonstrated knowledge of the respective area's history, culture, politics and economy; and the ability to use the latest technology and teaching techniques. Also desired are experience in teaching language skills to a wide range of adult students, from beginners to those at a more advanced proficiency level, and experience in program and/or education management. As part of the screening and interview process, applicants will be required to take language proficiency tests in their native language. Advanced English proficiency is also required.

Salaries are based on the individual applicant's qualifications. In addition to base salary of $50,703 - $72,421, Language Instructors earn annual "bonus" pay ranging from $4,875 to $9,750, with the amount based on the language and their language proficiency. Language Instructors who speak multiple foreign languages may also qualify for additional bonuses in varying amounts. Furthermore, new employees can qualify for a lump-sum hiring bonus for languages, up to a maximum amount of $35,000.

The Department of East Asian and Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh seeks applicants for a Lecturer of Korean language and culture. This position is outside the tenure stream and would begin with the Fall Term 2008, pending budgetary approval. Candidates should possess native or near-native proficiency in all skill areas of Korean and English. Successful candidates must possess at least three years of teaching experience at the college level. Strong preference will be given to those with a PhD in teaching Korean as a second language, foreign language pedagogy, Korean linguistics, or a closely related field. Secondary training and interest in other disciplines, such as literature or cultural history, film, history, are desirable. The candidate should be familiar with current theories in second language acquisition and language pedagogy, and with historical and current cultural issues of Korea as they relate to other parts of Asia. Duties will include teaching Korean language at all levels, as well as (a) course(s) on the topic of candidate’s specialty. In addition, the candidate will contribute to developing Korean Studies at the University and participate actively in the University’s Asian Studies Center programs, which are enhanced by a Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant. The University’s East Asian Library enjoys a national prominence and has dedicated substantial resources to building the Korean Studies collection.

University Center for International Studies seeks to fill the position of Associate Director (AD) of its Asian Studies Center (ASC). With an international reputation for excellence, the ASC is designated a National Resource Center in East Asian Studies by the U.S. Department of Education and is one of four such centers in the University.

The ASC has strengths in East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Pacific Islands. The position is a full-time 12-month appointment. The AD is responsible for grant proposal development in consultation with the ASC faculty along with grant management and administration. The AD will work with the ASC faculty and representatives of other units in the development of research, instructional and outreach activities as well as the organization of new courses, conferences and workshops. The AD will supervise the administration of the ASC and will have major budgetary responsibilities. The AD will report to the ASC Director, and will represent ASC on behalf of the Director. The position requires both domestic and foreign travel.

Desirable qualifications include: a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline; fluency in a major Asian or Pacific language; significant university experience; and excellent administrative, interpersonal and computer skills.
