Korean Lecturer Position

 

 The Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University invites applications for a three-quarter time Lecturer position in Korean language beginning July 1, 2008. One-year probationary contract (at full time) with three-year renewable contract to follow contingent upon merit and the continued need and availability of program funding.

 

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and native speaker level competency in Korean is required, as is prior college-level teaching experience and ability to teach all levels of Korean. Also required is an explicit understanding of the linguistic properties of Korean; knowledge of the cultural background necessary to teach the language; familiarity with language-teaching methodologies, including technology-related pedagogy, and ability to work both in a team and autonomously at all levels of the language. Supervisory experience preferred.

Lecturer in Korean Language (1-year contract)

 

 The DEPARTMENT OF ASIAN STUDIES is accepting applications for one 12-month lecturer position (1 year contract) in Korean language, commencing September 1, 2008 and ending August 31, 2009. The successful applicant will teach 18 credits in the 2008W Academic Year (September 1, 2008 April 30, 2009) as well as 6 credits in the 2009 Summer Session. Courses to be taught:  KORN 200: Intermediate (6 credits) (2 sections, for a total of 12 credits)

 KORN 301: Introduction to Sino-Korean Readings (6 credits) plus an additional 6-credit course, to be determined. Applicants are required to have native or near-native fluency in Korean, a Masters degree (or be near completion) in Applied Linguistics, Language Education, or TESOL/TESL, and relevant teaching experience at the college/university level in North America. Salary and benefits are governed by UBC's Agreement on Conditions of Appointment for Sessional and Part-time Faculty Members.

The Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at Brigham Young University invites applications for a permanent (continuing faculty status) assistant or associate professor position that will begin in the fall of 2008.  Applicants should have a Ph.D. (or near completion of the degree) in linguistics, second language acquisition, teaching Korean as a foreign language, or other, related field.  Teaching duties may include a course in the linguistic structure of Korean and Korean language courses at all levels (with an emphasis on intermediate and advanced level courses), and training and supervision of teaching assistants and part-time faculty.  Involvement is also expected in materials development and in program and curriculum development and assessment.  Candidates should have native or near- native proficiency in Korean and English, experience in teaching Korean, preferably at the undergraduate college level.  There is a strong expectation of scholarly research and publication and of active involvement in department, college, and professional service.

The Central Intelligence Agency is hiring qualified and experienced Language Instructors of Arabic, Chinese/Mandarin, Dari, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Pashtu, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Thai, and Turkish to work in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

The CIA provides first-class training for energetic, creative and committed intelligence professionals. CIA Language Instructors deliver programs that provide students with the foreign language communications skills and cross-cultural awareness they need to live and work abroad effectively, or to perform other language-related duties. Foreign Language Instructors apply the latest instructional methodologies to meet highly customized student needs and conduct language proficiency testing in reading, speaking and understanding for skills evaluation. In addition, they may be asked to provide a variety of language support services worldwide.

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's in foreign language, linguistics or a related field; native fluency in the language; 2-5 years of teaching experience; demonstrated knowledge of the respective area's history, culture, politics and economy; and the ability to use the latest technology and teaching techniques. Also desired are experience in teaching language skills to a wide range of adult students, from beginners to those at a more advanced proficiency level, and experience in program and/or education management. As part of the screening and interview process, applicants will be required to take language proficiency tests in their native language. Advanced English proficiency is also required.

Salaries are based on the individual applicant's qualifications. In addition to base salary of $50,703 - $72,421, Language Instructors earn annual "bonus" pay ranging from $4,875 to $9,750, with the amount based on the language and their language proficiency. Language Instructors who speak multiple foreign languages may also qualify for additional bonuses in varying amounts. Furthermore, new employees can qualify for a lump-sum hiring bonus for languages, up to a maximum amount of $35,000.
