SUNY AT BINGHAMTON
June 27 -29, 2008
CALL
FOR PAPERS/PARTICIPATION
(Submission
Deadline: March 1, 2008)
Pre-Conference --
Professional Development Workshop (June 27- June 28 AM)
Theme: The Big
Picture of Korean Language Curriculum
Workshop
sessions will address issues of Korean language instruction in view of larger
curricular goals on which to base micro-level, day-to-day decisions about
teaching materials and activities.
One guiding principle of curricular development can be found in 5 Cs
of the National Standards for Foreign Language Education (http://www.actfl.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3392):
Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.
Workshop
proposals should address aspects of program models with an articulation of
learning objectives, strategies for their achievements and evaluation
methods, or present teaching modules in reference to these. Program models include not only the whole
or part of college and high school Korean curricula, but also study abroad,
internship and self-instruction programs and others. While we will give
priority to proposals that squarely address the workshop theme, topics on
other aspects of Korean Language Teaching will be considered. Each workshop session is two hours long
and is intended to explore the topic in depth.
Proposal
requirements for a session at the Professional Development Workshop: TWO
pages (8.5 X 11) maximum, 11-point font, 1-inch margins. Proposals must specify the topics to be
discussed and describe how the workshops will involve participants in
“hands-on” activities, including step-by-step explanation of
procedures. Please indicate
“Workshop Proposal” on the top line of the first page.
Annual Conference (June 28 PM –
June 29)
Theme:
Genre and Cultural Literacy in Korean Language Programs
We would like
papers to address the interrelationship between GENRE and CULTURE or
CULTURAL LITERACY—that is, in what ways is CULTURE both created
through and reflected in particular GENRES OF DISCOURSE (e.g., oral storytelling,
speeches, debates, print ads, TV commercials, essays, short stories) and
how, specifically, by teaching features of a discourse genre, can we also
raise awareness about and sensitivity to culture and literacy?
While we
encourage submissions of abstracts that address the conference theme,
abstracts from all areas of Korean Language Teaching and Learning based on
any theoretical and/or pedagogical perspective are welcome. Presentations are 30 minutes (20 minutes
talk plus 10 minutes for questions and answers).
Abstract
requirements for a paper at the Annual Conference: ONE page (8.5 X 11) maximum, 11-point
font, 1-inch margins. An optional second page is permitted for data and
references. All abstracts must be
anonymous. Submissions are limited
to 1 individual and 1 joint abstract per author, or 2 joint abstracts per
author. Abstracts that do not squarely address the conference theme may
also be considered. Please indicate “Annual Conference
abstract” on the top line.
Evening Sessions: Exchange of Teaching Materials and Ideas
(June 27-28)
Informal
evening sessions will be held for discussion of specifics of classroom
teaching. The sessions will consist
of a series of short presentations (10 minute maximum) and discussions.
Proposals for
the Evening Session: ONE PAGE description of the teaching material or
classroom activity that you have developed to share with other
teachers. Please indicate which of
the following your proposal addresses:
(1) skill area
(vocabulary, grammar, speaking, writing, etc),
(2)
instructional type (student activity, drill, assignment, test, etc.), and
(3) material (text, audio, video, software, etc.).
Please also indicate
“Teaching Materials Exchange” on the top line.
