PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

June 14th and part of June 15th will be devoted to the professional development workshop. We encourage presenters to focus on the theme of this year’s workshop, i.e. issues of testing and assessment.  It can address such questions as what are appropriate and practical goals and forms of placement tests; how should heritage students with uneven skills be placed where a separate track is not available; what is the validity of ACTFL OPI guidelines for assessing students’ proficiency; can existing proficiency tests such as KPT, SAT 2 Korean, KPLT, TOPIK be used for the needs of Korean programs; what are the potentials of developing adaptive proficiency tests? Other topics related to materials and task developments will be considered too.

Proposals may be submitted by an individual and/or by a group of presenters. A workshop presentation must involve participants in “hands-on” activities or discussions to bring in relevant experience and observations to explore the issue. The proposals should include step-by-step explanations of procedures.  Each workshop session is expected to last for approximately two hours.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Part of June 15th and 16th will be devoted to the main conference. This year’s conference proposes broadening our perspective of the Korean curriculum and program development in the context of higher education. To what extent is Korean language instruction related to goals of college education, academic discourses, or analytical and critical understanding of societies and cultures? What role does language instruction play in the intellectual life of college students? Should more specialization in language instruction lead to its compartmentalization and marginalization in academia?

You are invited to submit an abstract (minimum 250 words, maximum 400 words, to be strictly observed) for a 30-minute presentation (20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions and discussions) on the conference theme or other topics related to the enhancement of teaching Korean language, culture or literature.

Review of Abstracts/Proposals

The abstracts will be screened by a review committee.  A workshop proposal that does not include step-by-step procedures and a paper abstract that merely introduces a particular program, multimedia or otherwise at the prospective presenter’s institution will not be accepted. Criteria for the review of abstracts include:

(a) Importance and relevance of the topic

(b) Innovation and contribution to the teaching of Korean language, culture or literature

(c) Clarity and completeness of the purposes and content of presentation

(d) Active and productive engagement of workshop participants; or validity and rigor of research findings or proposed applications to teaching

If you have any questions or comments, please direct them to the Chairs of the 2007 AATK meeting.
